Rosie Bergonzi
Rosie Bergonzi is a classically trained percussionist, graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 2016 as a Master of Music, before receiving a scholarship the following year. She is now an active musician, with theatre performances including As You Like It, and Richard II at Shakespeare's Globe and, Billy and The Beast, an interactive opera with Britten Sinfonia. She loves playing pop music, with world tours with singers Neneh Cherry, Celeste and Loyle Carner.
She has a strong interest in non-western traditions, with training in Ghanaian drumming; Latin percussion (salsa and samba); Middle Eastern frame drums and cajon. Rosie enjoys playing improvised music with various improv troupes and is the Resident Percussionist with Dreamweaver Quartet. She is a founding member of Beaten Track, a percussion ensemble, and Boubakiki, a handpan and saxophone duo.
Rosie came across the handpan in 2014, when she heard a busker play it in London. It was an instant love affair, as Rosie combined the techniques learned in various forms of hand percussion into something specifically handpan. In any spare time, she loves to busk with her handpan.
During lockdown she started creating tutorials, covers and solo works under Handpan Fundamentals. She received a Royal Philharmonic Society 'Trailblazer' award for her work with the handpan in 2021 and continues to challenge the handpan into unusual areas of music.
Rosie is an accomplished solo performer. Her solo recitals are often a theatrical affair, with performances incorporating spoken word and movement. She has performed a series of these at The Barbican, Hangout UK, Panmarco, and Canaries Handpan Festival. She has a new family friendly solo set in progress, Words and Music. The Guardian noted "the contagious grace with which she made every movement" at her 2015 set at Sound Unbound. Winning the Goldsmiths Concerto contest in 2014 meant she performed the Ney Rosauro Vibraphone Concerto (2015).
She loves playing orchestrally, recently with BBC Proms, Chineke! Orchestra, and Aurora Orchestra; and is a founding member of ensembles Beaten Track and Boubakiki, and PortaBanda.
With a number of solo records out, this exciting performer is looking forward to performing Cassie Kinoshi's Handpan Concerto with the Chineke! Orchestra.
