Aziz Shokhakimov
Musical and artistic director of the Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra since September 2021, Aziz Shokhakimov has established himself as one of the most gifted conductors of his generation.
With contagious energy, he conducts eight subscription series each season and numerous concerts on the move, helping to ensure the Orchestra's regular presence at festivals and on major French and international stages.
Committed to the dissemination of music in Alsace, he also conducts concerts in the territory and is involved in educational projects, particularly for young audiences.
In Tashkent, where he was born, Aziz Shokhakimov studied violin, viola and conducting before taking the reins of the National Symphony Orchestra of Uzbekistan.
Revealed in 2010 by the Second Prize at the Gustav Mahler International Conducting Competition in Bamberg, he quickly forged a reputation with the greatest musical institutions. He collaborates with leading orchestras, such as the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Luzerner Sinfonieorchester and the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi. In 2016, he received the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Young Conductors Award at the Salzburg Festival, thus consolidating his position on the international scene. In 2023, the Critics' Union named him Musical Personality of the Year.
A regular guest of the greatest orchestral ensembles, Aziz Shokhakimov conducts the Orchestre National de France, the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, as well as the London Philharmonic, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, the Orchestre national de la RAI, the Vienna Symphony and the Gulbenkian Orchestra.
His career also developed in the United States (Atlanta, Dallas, Seattle, Houston and Utah) as well as in Asia with the Tokyo and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestras. In October 2024, he conducts the Orchestre de Paris at short notice for two concerts, alongside Gautier Capuçon. The 2025-2026 season marks his debut with other prestigious orchestras (Staatsorchester Hamburg, Dutch and Rotterdam Philharmonics).
Also recognized for his work in the operatic field, Aziz Shokhakimov held the position of Kapellmeister at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein between 2015 and 2021, where he conducted landmark productions such as Madama Butterfly, Salome and The Queen of Spades. It is with this title by Tchaikovsky that he makes his debut at the Munich Opera in 2024. He has also performed at the Paris Opera in 2023 (Lucia di Lammermoor) and three times at the Opéra national du Rhin (Braunfels' The Birds, Rimsky-Korsakov's The Tale of Tsar Saltane and Wagner's Lohengrin).
On record, thanks to the Orchestra's partnership with Warner, Aziz Shokhakimov has distinguished himself in his recordings of Tchaikovsky (Symphony No. 5) and Prokofiev ("classical" Symphony No. 1 and Suites from Romeo and Juliet). Equally fond of the French repertoire, he recently recorded Ravel's Daphnis et Chloé.
