Elgar Cello Concerto
The Music Makers
Finzi For Saint Cecilia
New London Sinfonia
Basingstoke Choral Society will be celebrating more than just Saint Cecilia’s Day, with some of the world’s most beautiful music from two great English composers. Finzi wrote For Saint Cecilia to celebrate music’s patron saint. It was first performed seventy three years ago on this very day.
The Music Makers by Elgar, was first performed in 1912. The text is based on the 1874 poem, Ode by Arthur O’Shaughnessy and is very typical of Elgar’s own nature as a dreaming artist. The Cello Concerto, his last notable work, is full of memorable yet simple and ethereal melodies, which strike at the very heart.
