Mendelssohn Concerto for violin and piano
Mozart Symphony no. 39
David Lefevre violin
Matthias Bamert conductor
Mendelssohn’s youthful concerto, with its unusual combination of soloists, is an engaging and enjoyable work. The three movements show the many facets of Mendelssohn’s musical imagination, with the running counterpoint of the first movement, grace and elegance of the slow movement and the pace and verve of the finale all characteristic of the precocious composer. Mozart’s symphony is the first of his miraculous final trio of symphonies, which extended both the structure and emotional range of the form. Its scoring with clarinets instead of oboes gives it a rich and lyrical character.
