Beethoven Symphony no. 4
Betthoven Symphony no. 7
The ceremonial ‘Name Day’ overture uses music Beethoven originally considered as part of the Ninth Symphony but later reworked as a stand-alone concert piece. The two symphonies that follow share many characteristics – both in four separate movements, unlike nos. 5 and 6, with a rhythmic slow movement placed second, and beginning with an extended slow introduction. But in the seven years that separated their composition, Beethoven had moved to a different stylistic level, and the contrasts between the works are fascinating.
