Haydn Sinfonia Concertante for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon
Mendelssohn Symphony no. 3 (Scottish)
Gerard Korsten conductor
Mozart’s early G minor symphony shows the emotional depths that the teenage composer could convey, in a key that was always special to him. Haydn’s genial Sinfonia Concertante, for violin, cello, oboe and bassoon, is an enjoyable piece with which the composer could show off the characteristics of his orchestra at Ezsterhazy. Mendelssohn’s symphony stems from a trip the young composer made to the Highlands in 1829, although it was actually the last that he composed. His most overtly emotional work, it encompasses a wide range of moods, from dramatic struggle, through the melancholy, reflective slow movement, to the finale which ends with a jubilant coda.
