Gershwin Piano Concerto
Prokofiev Symphony no. 5
Marin Alsop conductor
Gershwin’s Piano Concerto was commissioned by Walter Damrosch, conductor of the New York Symphony Orchestra, the day after he had heard the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. A traditional three-movement concerto, it is permeated with Gershwin’s jazzy, optimistic spirit. Prokofiev’s Fifth Symphony was written in 1944 and marked the composer’s return to symphonic form after a gap of some fourteen years. It was his most successful and popular symphony right from its first performance, with a tense first movement, biting scherzo and passionate slow movement before the more upbeat finale.
