Schumann Violin Concerto
Schumann Overture, scherzo and finale
Beethoven Symphony no. 8
Alexander Shelley conductor
Schumann’s Violin Concerto is full of the composer’s personal lyricism and invention. Written for Joachim and a strong influence on the later violin concerto of Brahms, its slow movement is particularly beautiful and the piece as a whole is unjustly neglected. The Overture, Scherzo and Finale was written as an orchestral suite immediately after the completion of the Spring Symphony and shares the freshness and excitement of that work. The Schumann pieces are framed by Beethoven’s trenchant overture, and his delightful perfectly proportioned Eighth Symphony.
