Strauss Also Sprach Zarathustra
Strauss An Alpine Symphony
Lorin Maazel conductor
To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Richard Strauss, Lorin Maazel conducts two of his most ambitious and spectacular symphonic poems. Also Sprach Zarathustra opens with one of the most striking passages fanfares in all music, and builds to tremendous climaxes, including the Dance of the Superman, before dissolving into an enigmatic ending, poised uncertainly between two keys. An Alpine Symphony was the composer’s last symphonic poem, about which he said “at last, I have learned how to orchestrate.” More than just a brilliant musical depiction of a day in the mountains, it becomes a hymn to creation and man’s place in the natural order.
