Mozart                  Overture: The Marriage of Figaro
Michael Haydn    Violin Concerto in A
Mozart                  Serenade in D K320 (Posthorn)

Alina Ibragimova violin/director

The sparkling overture to Mozart’s most popular opera opens this concert. Haydn’s younger brother Michael was also a prolific and inventive composer, who spent his career in Salzburg and was friends with the Mozart family. The A major is the last and most ambitious of his three violin concertos, dating from about 1776. The Posthorn Serenade was possibly written for the end of year ceremony of Salzburg University. Its seven movements are contrasted in tempo and orchestration, ending with a presto finale which includes suitably celebratory flourishes from the posthorn.
