Humperdinck's delightful Hansel & Gretel Overture from his fairy-tale opera is based on a number of folk-inspired themes including the charming Evening Hymn. Although not so well-known today, Reinecke was a very influential musical figure in his day. Inspired by Brahms's Hungarian Dances, Dvorak's Slavonic Dances were originally written for piano duet but were soon orchestrated at the request of his publisher and have become very popular and often-played staples of the orchestral repertoire. Hampshire-based organist Graham Bint performs Saint-Saens's Organ Symphony, one of the 19th century's most significant and technically sophisticated orchestral works, containing a remarkable concatenation of tunes, colours and kaleidoscopic thematic invention that have made it so popular since its première in 1886.
