Mendelssohn   Overture: The Hebrides
Holliger             Meta arca
Mendelssohn   Piano Concerto no. 1
Schubert           Symphony no. 9

Stephen Hough    Piano
Heinz Hollinger

Mendelssohn’s piano concerto shows many of his strengths, as a dramatic first movement gives way to a lyrical and tender slow section. The finale is a tour de force of fleet fingered virtuosity. Mendelssohn's vivid musical picture of the surging sea around Fingal's cave is followed by a short piece by tonight's conductor, written for this orchestra.

Schubert’s last symphony is possibly his greatest masterpiece in any form, a supremely lyrical and imaginative work. The four movements are built on a grand scale and the musical architecture is handled with great care, yet the whole piece unfurls in one majestic sweep.
