The Lady: A Homage to Sandy Denny

Thu 24 May, 7.45pm

Tickets: £21; over 60s, under 16s and full-time students £19

In the years since her tragic early death, folk-rock icon Sandy Denny has emerged as one of the UK 's greatest singer-songwriters. Her song Who Knows Where the Time Goes has been recorded by artists as diverse as Cat Power, Nina Simone and Judy Collins. This special show celebrates her legacy for a new generation, as artists such as Laura Marling, Joanna Newsom and FlorenceWelch cite her as an influence.

Denny is recognized for her pivotal involvement with British folk rock. All her recordings have now been re-issued and an acclaimed album of new songs discovered in her archive and completed by Thea Gilmore entitled Don’t Stop Singing was released late last year. For the first time Sandy Denny’s entire musical legacy is showcased live bringing together her work with Fairport Convention, Fotheringay, her solo career and the new songs.

Thea Gilmore joins an unprecedented line up including former colleagues and friends Dave Swarbrick, Maddy Prior and Jerry Donahue, alongside Joan Wasser (aka Joan As Police Woman), P P Arnold and young admirers including Lavinia Blackwall (Trembling Bells), Sam Carter, Ben Nicholls and Blair Dunlop and other guests. Together with members of Bellowhead, who form the core of a house ‘super group’, they create this unique, adventurous homage to the artist described by Richard Thompson as ‘the greatest British female artist of her generation’.
