“Is there a better orchestra in Britain than the Philharmonia? A more outstanding musician than Salonen? I don’t think so.” The Guardian

Mahler’s massive Resurrection Symphony follows a symbolic journey from death to life across its five movements, starting with an imposing funeral march, enduring a crisis of faith in the middle movements and ending with an explosion of joy in the choral finale. The composer wrote: “I will probably never attain such heights or plumb such depths again” and the symphony remained one of his favourite works. Its demands are such that performances remain comparatively rare and memorable events. The concert opens with the first performance of a new piece from young British composer Joseph Phibbs, co-commissioned with the Philharmonia Orchestra for The Anvil’s eighteenth birthday.

The Philharmonia Orchestra is Anvil Arts’ Orchestra in Partnership.

This concert is available on subscription. Please contact the box office for more details.
