The Anvil
Abdullah Ibrahim's Ekaya
Wed 31 Mar, 7.45pm
Tickets: £22; over 60s £20; under 16s and students £9.50
The iconic South African pianist returns for a rare concert with the latest incarnation of the seven-piece band that he formed during the 1980s, and which recorded landmark albums such as African River and Cape Town Flowers.
Renowned as one of the great jazz composers, Ibrahim’s music travels a journey from evocative and delicately pitched ballads to infectious swing that’s instantly resonant of the exuberant chant-like vigour of his native land.
Joined by his long-established rhythm team of Belden Bullock (base) and George Gray (drums), and a consummate New York horn section that inhabit and transform the music, this is music for the heart and soul.
“Giants still walk the earth, and Abdullah Ibrahim is one of them… an authority that is almost regal” Newsday
