Imogen Cooper piano
conducted by Iván Fischer
One of the world’s great orchestras, the Budapest Festival Orchestra’s programme begins with their compatriot Dohnanyi’s Symphonic Minutes. This attractive piece, in five short movements, shows the composer’s mastery of the orchestra. Beethoven’s piano concerto illustrates the young composer and pianist out to show all he was capable of to his Viennese audience. Brahms’ Fourth Symphony is the fruit of a lifetime wrestling with the problem of how to write symphonies after Beethoven, and balance the dramatic and contemplative sides of his character. The four movements end with a huge passacaglia, thirty variations on a theme from a Bach cantata.
“The BFO is one of the great orchestras and the playing was exceptional.” The Guardian
