J. Strauss Overture: Die Fledermaus
Elgar Sospiri
Holst Mars and Jupiter from the Planets Suite
Walton Crown Imperial – Concert March
Curtis Romanza
Tchaikovsky Concert Overture – 1812
Roger Clarkson conductor
From the world of Vienna in its glory days comes the Overture to Die Fledermaus, one of the most famous operettas ever to be composed. Moving on forty years we have two very different responses to the turbulent times of the First World War – the heartfelt Sospiri from Elgar and the majestic Planets Suite from Holst. The drama of Walton’s Crown Imperial and the luscious textures of Curtis’ Romanza make way for a triumphant return to the theme of war with the powerfully rousing 1812 Concert Overture. Tchaikovsky’s intention was to perform it in a Moscow square with a large orchestra, a military band, cathedral bells and cannon fire. We may not be able to provide cathedrals or cannons tonight, but we are proud to present one of the country’s finest orchestras.
