Music from Rimsky-Korsakov’s shimmering fairy-tale masterpiece opens this all-Russian programme from one of the world’s great orchestras. Rachmaninov’s Second Piano Concerto was a breakthrough piece after years of creative block. Its passionate and lyrical character has made it a favourite amongst his works.

The peaceful and evocative prelude to Mussorgsky’s opera Khovanshchina is followed by the composer’s suite of musical pictures, which includes castles, chicks and catacombs, culminating in the unforgettable grandeur of the great Gate of Kiev.
