As part of our commitment to sharing world music with the young people of Basingstoke we also run an annual tour with AfroSamba, a UK-based group comprised of musicians from Mozambique and the UK.

Visiting primary schools in and around Basingstoke and Deane the band teach students traditional songs from Mozambique, Brazil, Cape Verde and Cuba whilst introducing them to world music and instruments including the guiro and panderio.

The sessions also explore rhythm and the dynamics and structure of music as the children conduct the band, and use their bodies to create their own samba school.

Anna Burry, Music Manager and Class 5 Teacher at Chiltern Primary in Buckskin said, “It was important that the children had time to listen and enjoy music from other cultures and backgrounds... They loved the music, seeing the instruments played in front of them, and getting a chance to be loud and enthusiastic."

Sessions last one hour and there is a £50 charge to schools, which contributes towards the overall cost of running the tour. New schools are exempt from paying for their first session, so please get in touch if you are interested in having AfroSamba visit your school.
